The swimmers are part of a growing number of people searching for a reconnection with nature. They are involved in a deliberate act of immersion; away from digital technology, away from the ‘market place’. In contemporary life we can be overwhelmed and alienated from both the natural world and one another. The swimmers connect with the elements, the ancient landscape and with each other bringing joy to their lives.
In the winter, their comments are upbeat: “I feel energised and in the ‘moment’ . It’s like a meditation. I have a sense of physical elation and my whole body feels like it’s bursting with life”.
The physical, emotional and mental health benefits of ‘wild swimming’ are now well documented. By photographing these swimmers my aim is to communicate the sense of peace, tranquility and joyousness experienced in this weekly ritual.
